Madeline Kirkpatrick

PhD Student

Biography

Madeline is a final-year PhD student in the MBP Lab. Her PhD research focuses on developing clinically relevant in vitro models to investigate the molecular mechanisms linking antenatal depression with adverse offspring outcomes, using placental and foetal brain cells exposed to serum from women during pregnancy.

She is also involved in new studies extending these serum-based approaches to model how circulating biological factors associated with different clinical conditions influence brain and cellular function, with the broader aim of better understanding mind–body interactions.

Alongside her research, Madeline is a writer and editor for Inspire the Mind, a digital mental health magazine dedicated to making scientific research accessible to wider audiences.
